7 Reasons for Fostering a Pet
Make a difference – become a foster parent!
- You may save an animal’s life: In some shelters, animals have to be euthanized once the facility has reached its capacity, so every animal that finds a foster home can help to reduce a shelter’s euthanasia rate.
- You will help to increase your foster pet’s chance of being adopted: Your care will prepare your foster pet for adoption, helping them to learn to live in a home environment, socializing them with other people & animals, and helping them to adapt to new experiences.
- Fostering is temporary: Fostering is a great solution for people who love pets and want to help an animal in need but cannot commit to the lifetime care of a pet.
- Fostering helps animals that are highly stressed in a shelter, particularly older dogs & cats and animals which have experienced cruelty. Although shelter staff do their best for each animal, in many overcrowded shelters, the staff do not have enough time to give the individual care some animals may need.
- You are financially covered: Shelters and rescue groups typically pay for veterinary care, sometimes for food and bedding, too.
- 'Goodbye' signifies a happy ending in fostering! Saying goodbye to pets can be very difficult, but when you foster, your tears are tears of joy when your foster pet finds their forever home.
- You may find your ideal pet. Fostering can lead to foster failure: If you really fall in love with ‘your’ foster pet, and it’s clear that you want and can share your life with your then adoption may be an option and a happy end for everyone.
