Cow in factory farming

Our Position on COP29

Lowering emissions through animal welfare and warning against false solutions

11/11/2024

Every year, world leaders gather at the UN Climate Conference of the Parties (COP29) to advance global climate action. FOUR PAWS has been participating in the COPs since in 2022 and co-hosted the first ever pavilion on food and farming at COP27. This year, FOUR PAWS is traveling to Baku for COP29 to give billions of farmed animals a voice on-site. Our team engages with policymakers, stakeholders and partners to promote sustainable farming practices that are positive for animals, climate and ecosystems.

Climate and Animal Welfare

The role of animal agriculture in global methane emissions

The role of animal agriculture in global methane emissions

Animal farming is responsible for 1/3 of global manmade methane emissions, stemming primarily from cow burps, also known as enteric fermentation, and manure. Some strategies promoted by the industry to reduce these emissions pose a significant threat to animal welfare. FOUR PAWS advocates for holistic solutions and nature-positive farming practices to lower the climate impact of animal agriculture and safeguard animal welfare.

Feeding false alternatives: climate, biodiversity and health risks of upscaling pig and poultry production

Feeding false alternatives: climate, biodiversity and health risks of upscaling pig and poultry production

The climate impacts of animal agriculture go beyond methane emissions. A closer look at the large-scale feed production needed to sustain factory farming reveals the various emissions, environmental impacts and public health threats caused by the industry. Pig and poultry welfare is at particular risk of being ignored, if we do not look at the full picture.
